Evan Wels, countertenor, is a singer, choral conductor, and educator from New York. Now based in Sydney, he is Director of Choirs at the Shore School, and sings with the Sydney Chamber Choir. Evan received his education in choral conducting and vocal performance from Yale University, where he received both Bachelors and Master of Music degrees. While at Yale, under the tutelage of Marguerite Brooks and Simon Carrington, he performed professionally with the Yale Schola Cantorum, Yale Pro Musica, Camerata, and the world-renowned Yale Whiffenpoofs. In New York, Evan's professional singing credits include the early music ensembles Tiffany Consort and Guildsingers, and the choirs of St. Michael's Church and the Church of the Heavenly Rest.
The New York Times praised Evan's choral ensembles as "beautifully trained and tuned." He directed the choirs at the Spence School (New York) for 17 years, where he recorded the album "Red Rocking Chair," led multiple international tours, and performed regularly at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He lives in Sydney with his wife, pianist Andrea Lam, and their son, Avery. |
